Always been venerated in Japan as a plant brings good luck, the Prunus mume is certainly one of the most loved species for its particularly generous flowering and fructification. It blooms in abundance already towards the end of winter when the surrounding nature is still immersed in the long winter sleep, however it begins to form the buds in the summer. The light flowers vary from white to different shades of pink, creating a beautiful contrast with the bare branches and the wrinkled trunk. The prunus mume likes an acid soil, the ideal is a mix of universal soil, akadama and pozzolana (or volcanic lapilli). Watering the prunus should be done by watering the soil thoroughly only when it is dry, taking care not to wet the flowers. It tolerates the winter cold well, provided you protect the root system from cold winter frosts. During the hot period it loves the sun but not direct exposure to sunlight. Fertilizers must be constant throughout the growing season, using bonsai fertilizer. Pruning: pruning in winter is not recommended.
The tradition of growing oak in the form of bonsai was born in 1950 in California.
