Punica Granatum, more commonly called pomegranate, is a species that lends itself very well to bonsai cultivation, as it well tolerates drastic pruning and clamping. Highly decorative, it charms because of its thick branches, its spectacular blooming, as well as its bright red flowers. The name is Latin derived and literally means “pome with seeds", referring to its shape, which is similar to that of an apple. The juicy grains are widely used in the kitchen, not just Mediterranean, but also Middle Eastern and Asian. Punica Granatum greatly benefits from direct watering, so you should position the pot under full sun during summer, but protect it from the cold during winter. Water it regularly, but allow the soil to dry off before watering it again. Repotting must be made every two years, whilst pruning and clamping should occur during spring.
