Ficus Ginseng, the bonsai with spectacular roots

The bonsai of Ficus Ginseng, a variation of the famous Ficus Retusa, is one of the most used varieties for bonsai cultivation due to its resistance to diseases and pests and for its safe and unusual appearance.
There are more hypotheses that could explain the etymology of the name: it could derive from the Chinese "Jen-Shen", whose meaning is "human plant"; its roots indeed have a silhouette that resembles that of a human figure. A second probable justification is given by the similarity that the same roots have with the homonymous herbal plant, with which however it has no kinship.
The trunk has a delicate light brown color, covered with thin striations, while the foliage has a shade that varies from light green when the leaf is young until it reaches a much darker shade with growth. Certainly it is among the most suitable for a cultivation according to the Japanese style "Neagari", or with exposed roots. From the branches often other aerial roots start, which once reached earth form further trunks. Ficus Ginseng is particularly recommended for those who want to approach the world of bonsai. Its features as a houseplant make it wonderful for any environment.
In addition to being extremely scenographic, Ficus Ginseng needs a few simple treatments to grow at its best: it can safely live inside in abundant light conditions; does not suffer with hot weather and must be repaired if temperatures fall below 10 ° C.
It likes a fresh and drained soil: it is perfect a mix of universal soil rich in salts mixed with a bit of Akadama.
The soil must always be kept moist and must be fertilized with nitrogen-poor fertilizers: every two weeks during the hot period and every four weeks during the winter.
In spring and autumn, then at the beginning and at the end of the vegetative period, the bonsai of Ficus Ginseng should be pruned to maintain a proportionate appearance.
