History and curiosities: The changing of the leaves color every season makes this tree one of the most spectacular Japanese bonsai.
This is a strong and adaptable bonsai, which tolerates long period of water shortage and is extremely resistant to temperature change or drastic pruning done in wrong periods. In other words, it is the ideal bonsai for those who wish to give a refined touch to their house, without worrying too much about its care. You can take care of bonsai by following a few and simple rules: you just need to use a slightly acid soil which always has to be kept well drained. The plant requires irregular watering, without exaggerating, and needs to be fertilized once a year with slow release fertilizers. This is an outdoor bonsai: place it in a very bright area (such as a balcony or terrace) but possibly avoiding direct sunlight that could damage the leaves - especially during the summer - and strong air currents. The plant will pay back this little care with the splendid red colour of its leaves in autumn, which will endure for a few weeks and let you enjoy the passing of the seasons.
Exposure and brightness: Spring and Autumn: half shade; Summer: possibly in shade or half shade (direct sunshine would risk cracking delicate leaves); Winter: with very rigid temperatures it is to be repaired in a cold greenhouse or under a roof.
Temperature: They are resistant plants, but they must be protected when the temperature drops below -10 ° C.
Type of soil: Needed of a slightly acidic and well drained soil; Just a mix of universal soil with 20% of sand and Acadama.
Irrigation: Do not over-dry the substrate. Water abundantly every time the soil appears almost dry, especially in summer (also every day with high temperatures). Use the nebulae on the leaves.
Fertilization: Constant throughout the vegetative period, with slow release fertilizer NPK.
N.B. The specifications described above may vary depending on the climate of the area where the plant is placed and the season.
