The Prunus Mume or Japanese Apricot is native to China and is considered the beginners bonsai although it is one of the most scenic. The trunk is very recognizable as it has an old and wrinkled appearance. The foliage is dotted with small, serrated leaves and white, pale pink or magenta flowers. The fruits, which obviously appear after flowering, are reminiscent of apricots, and are used in Japan as a base for producing a refreshing summer drink. Following the right care, this bonsai will give you an explosion of color with its bloom, which will bring you back to the beautiful Japanese atmosphere.
It enjoys full sun in spring, autumn and winter; the shade is advisable in summer and protection from winter frosts. It comes to resist up to a few degrees below zero. It likes an acid soil, the ideal is a mix of universal soil, akadama and pozzolana (or volcanic lapilli). It needs a lot of water; water abundantly every time the soil is almost dry, especially in summer (even every day, with high temperatures). Repeat the operation at a distance of 2-3 times at a distance of a few minutes. Do not wet the flowers. It should be fertilized every 15 days from March to June and from August to October. Use slow release fertilizers, with a good percentage of phosphorus.
