This species of Sarracenia, introduced in Europe in 1860, is fascinating and easy to grow. The particular shape of its pitchers, tubular or conical structures which serve to trap preys, resembles the beak of a parrot: this bizarre resemblance is responsible for its name, which comes from the Greek words "psittakos" (psittacina), which means parrot. The moist environment in which it normally lives can be easily reproduced by keeping the saucer filled with water, especially in summer: this allows the pitchers, horizontally arranged, to be immersed in water. The plant can be placed in the house, provided that the environment is well-lit, where it becomes an extraordinary decorative element. In summer, it would be better to put the plant in a shaded corner. For its rusticity, the plant can also remain outdoor all year around, without fearing the cold in winter: with the first cold conditions, the pitchers wither, but the rhizome remains vital, allowing the vegetative recovery in spring. In this period the plant blooms, producing flowers with red petals and sepals. The best substrate for its cultivation is sphagnum peat mixed with perlite, while watering should be done with rainwater, osmotic water or purified water. The substances necessary to its nourishment are obtained by the digestion of the little preys, and therefore the plant does no need to be fertilized.
