More info

Sarracenia is a perennial carnivorous plant from North America, found especially in the area between Canada and United States. It resembles a "candlestick" because of its pitchers, the vertical and cone-shaped traps: insects are lured by the bright colours and by a particular sugary secretion; therefore they glide and remain trapped inside to be digested, providing the plant with the nitrogen it needs. For this reason, there is no need to use fertilizers: the ideal soil is made of peat and perlite or quartz sand. The plant grows well at temperatures between 0°C and 30°C, and loves being outdoor and enjoying the sun all day long. Water the plant regularly, in order to keep the substrate moist, using rainwater or purified water, as high concentrations of chlorine and calcium of the tap water might be harmful. The plant feeds on bees, wasps and flies, whereas some spiders use the pitchers as den to easily obtain food.
