Aloe variegata, the South African that grows on the mountain peaks

The Aloe mitriformis is a species that grows in mountainous areas and at altitudes between 1200 and 1500, between slabs of sandstone and granite and almost always in groups. In its natural habitat, it has long and creeping stems that often have secondary side shoots. The young Aloe mitriformis has an erect and very compact habit, while with the growth the leaves tend to move away from each other and to take a prostrate course. The same leaves show the thorns on the edges typical of Aloe but, unlike other species, are variegated with an elegant yellowish-white. Moreover, their arrangement varies depending on whether they are constantly exposed to the sun or not: the varieties that grow more in the shade have a narrower leaf arrangement. The mitriformis species takes its name from the shape of its rosette, which resembles a miter or a bishop's cap, especially during periods of drought. The general name of "Aloe" instead is derived from the Arabic "alloch" and translated as "allal" in Greek and Hebrew, literally means bitter sap (just because of the taste of the sap contained in the leaves).
The Aloe mitriformis should therefore be grown in full sun to allow its leaves to grow optimally. In the vegetative period the irrigation must be quite regular but without stagnations, which are very feared. They are succulent that do not have a very rapid growth and they also resist short frosts but if the cold is constant they must be protected.
They grow well in fertile and well-drained soil.
