More info

The olive is a great classic among bonsai all over the world. Longevity and resistance are among the features that make it more interesting, but not to be overlooked is certainly the beauty of the trunk, which with the growth takes on the appearance of a wonderful vegetable sculpture. Precisely for this reason the oldest specimens are proudly exhibited by the bonsaists as true works of art.
It is probably native to Asia Minor and Syria: the olive trees constitute here real forests that extend for several kilometers on the coasts. It then spread mainly in the Greek and Roman periods throughout the Mediterranean basin, becoming among the most common and characteristic species of the Italian territory (particularly in the South). The Olea sylvestris variety, also called "olivastro", grows wild on rocky areas and has small leaves, thorny branches and shrub bearing. It seems that the wild olive tree is the progenitor of what we now know as European Olea, which took on the appearance of a tree following human intervention through cultivation.
A bonsai olive tree needs to be cultivated in a very luminous position: being an outdoor variety it can be safely kept in full sun, which gives vigor to the leaves and facilitates flowering, but taking care to protect it from excessively high temperatures during summer (nebulisations can be made on the crown) and winter frosts. It requires a constantly drained but not moist soil, with continuous watering essential to show its evergreen soul. It is advisable to water it even in winter, obviously at wider intervals than in summer, and preferably in the morning allowing the soil to expel excess water at night.
An olive tree bonsai should be fertilized only during the vegetative period, then March-June and August-October, once a month with specific slow-release fertilizer for bonsai. It should also be repotted every 3-4 years and pruned after the vegetative phase: with these precautions you will maintain the millennial charm of this plant, which is now a real point of reference for any enthusiast.
