The Helleboreae genus includes about 30 perennial herbaceous species. It is called Christmas Rose because it blooms predominantly towards the end of Autumn.
To the detriment of the delicate appearance, Helleborus is a poisonous plant if ingested. In the past it was used as a medication remedy: Hippocrates administered the Rose of Christmas as a laxative and diuretic remedy and against mental disorders; such use was then suspended due to its high toxicity.
In many European regions, for its autumn / winter bloom and for various popular beliefs, it is linked to the Christian tradition.
Unlike most flowers, in the case of Helleborus these are not petals, but sepals.
The infruttescence of Christmas Rose consists of a number of follicles equal to the number of fertilized ovaries.
