Name: Pinus Thunbergii
Family: Pinaceae
Country of origin: Japan and South Korea
History and fun facts: extremely long-lived, in Japan some samples can live from one generation to another.
Commonly called "Japanese black pine", this bonsai tree is very appreciated for its daises and its trunk, growing out into very scenographic twisted patterns, as well as for its easy cultivation. The leaves are hard, needle-shaped and paired up into two. Their beautiful dark green colour creates a pleasant contrast with the creamy-brown branches and the white-greyish terminal buds at the end of every shoot. Pinus Thunbergii, so called in honour of 18th century Swedish physicist, Carl Peter Thunberg, is one of the most recommended plants for bonsai cultivation, as it shows extraordinary longevity even when in pot, being able to live even for hundreds of years. Suitable for novices as well, this plant needs a sunny yet windy environment, regular watering, waiting for the soi to get completely dry before watering again, as well as a good bonsai fertiliser to be given every 15 days from March until October. With these simple precautions, the plant will grow healthy and strong, creating a small zen oasis in your house.
